Potomac Air Field is the site for the Washington DC area celebration
of flight during National Transportation Week. The event, which
was first launched in 1998, gives children the opportunity to explore
aviation and the wonders of flight. Static displays, air
demonstrations, and interactive games are organized for learning
and for fun. According to
David Wartofsky - host of the event and owner of Potomac Airfield, "
this is a hotbed of innovation and aviation." The day kicked off
with an inspirational greeting from Rodney Slater, former Secretary of
Transportation, who shared encouragement with students, "Good,
Better, Best. I will not rest until my good is Better and my
Better is Best!"
Students from the
Metropolitan Washington area will display their singing abilities in the Transportation Star Search contest, culminating in an aircraft flyer contest on the runway.
Air-related industries
and special organizations will join the group.
The US Army Reserves 464th Division at Ft Belvoir will provide boat
rides from a nearby marina on the Army's Landing Craft-Mechanized
(LCM) flat bottomed boats, With their huge bow ramps that drop to
allow soldiers and equipment, they "hit the beach" in an amphibious
assault, just like the movies about WWII.
And.....the first African American female combat mission woman pilot
will be on board to talk to students!
An eight member Color
Guard from The Nations Capitol Region of Washington DC will post the
colors during the 'Pledge of Allegiance' to start the day at the
Potomac Airfield. Following will be the US Navy's Ceremonial Guard
drill team, which performs for the President, showing the skill and
discipline is needed to make precision movements while tossing rifles
through the air in a choreographed event.
Department of
Transportation personnel serve as volunteers partnering with the
teachers and principals on the day of the event chaperoning the children
around the exhibits and aircraft at the Airfield. Over 100 Navy and
Marine volunteers from Indian Head MD have also volunteered to serve
as role models and school chaperones for the day.
Come and meet the next
generation of transportation workers and experience the importance of living your
dreams. |
